WordPress Workshop Pre-work

Please read and sign up for one of the two options below prior to attending the WordPress Workshop
This will give us more time to learn the WordPress Dashboard in the workshop

As we get more and more questions about WordPress sites for blogging, Paul and I have added a WordPress workshop to our line-up of hands-on, bring your own laptop events. This workshop is for people new to WordPress. We are by no means experts, but we can show beginners a few key things to get them started.

Unlike Facebook or Twitter, there are a couple different options with WordPress.

Wordpress.com allows you to create a blog site for free. This is a popular way to start your blogging career, especially if you are not sure blogging is for you. There are 50 or so themes to choose from, but customization is severely limited.

Wordpress.org is the site where you can download the WordPress blogging software for free, but you must host it on the web at one of the many web hosting services found online. These are sites like Go Daddy, Host Gator, etc. There is a monthly fee that depends on the type of service and the amount of space you need. The .org version is highly customizable with a myriad of themes (some of which must be purchased) and plug-ins (applications added to a WP site to add some type of functionality).

For our WordPress workshop, I would like you to set up an account at one of the two following sites. For a free Wordpress.com style site, visit PressIgniter.com. It's very simple to set up an account, select a theme, and you're all set.

For a Wordpress.org hosted site, visit Page.ly. At Page.ly, you can get a fully hosted WP.org site with complete back-up, tons of themes, and key plug-ins already installed. The cost, including domain registration is $14.98 per month.

Bill and I look forward to seeing you at our next event… Happy blogging!
